Is Evolution Science? pt 1
Before I start, I want to make one thing clear. I believe that the Biblical creation account stands because God declared it to be so. God doesn’t need anyone to prove His existence and He doesn’t need science to ratify His work of creation.
Having said that, I have been excited and encouraged in my faith, to discover that the Biblical creation account also stands firmly in the face of scientific critique.
If you read nature magazines, watch David Attenborough and the like on any one of their nature shows, read school science text books, go to any natural history museum, visit a national park or browse any library, you’d be forgiven for thinking that evolution stands as an irrefutable fact.
There was a time that most people in the western world believed that God created the universe. They may not have been people of any real faith, but there was still a general consensus that the world was created.
When evolutionary theory was popularised by Charles Darwin in the 1860’s, people’s attention was drawn away from Almighty God, Creator of the Universe in a misguided understanding that ‘science’ had somehow proven God redundant.
However, over the last few decades, science has done quite a bit of catching up with God. It seems that the theory that has sent millions to hell is finding itself on shaky ground. Research in each scientific field is increasingly demonstrating the absurdity and impossibility of such a postulation and many evolutionary scientists are scurrying to find alternative theories that would explain our existence.
Our Introduction to the Issue
It must have been around the mid nineteen-eighties that God brought my husband into contact with a ministry organisation whose whole purpose is to tackle creation/evolution issues from a scientific point of view. The contact came by way of an invitation to a free breakfast. My husband wasn’t particularly interested in the subject of the upcoming meeting, but he was interested in two aspect of the invitation - ‘free’ and ‘food’! He admits that it’s about the only way God would have gotten him to go!
He came home a changed man.
Before the meeting, he saw the creation/evolution debate as being a sideline issue. By lunch time he understood it to be a major battle ground.
Before the meeting he thought that ‘recent creation’ was not supported by science and that you simply believed it because that is what the Bible says. Now he understood that scientific evidence upheld the Biblical account of recent and instantaneous creation while evolution, though a popular theory, is not scientific.
NOT SCIENTIFIC??!!?
That’s right.
What is Science?
Remember your early High School Science lessons? My very first lesson was “An Introduction to Science”. In it we were given three important measuring sticks by which we can tell if something is scientific or not. We were taught that Science must be:
- Observable
- Repeatable
- Provable
We then performed some simple experiments that demonstrated true science. In one of those experiments we had to find out whether iron or wood was the best heat conductor. We applied the same level of heat to both items for the same period of time and found, by various observational methods, that iron was the better heat conductor. There were several groups of students all doing the same experiment at the same time and all coming to the same conclusion. We therefore demonstrated repeatability and came to a proven conclusion.
That is Science.
But is Evolution Science?
To answer that, we just need to see whether it satisfies the three criteria above.
1. It is Observable?
Have you seen evolution in action? That is, have you seen one kind of creature turn into another? Have you seen intermediary forms - creatures on their way to becoming something else? This requires an INCREASE in genetic information - a process that has never been scientifically observed to occur. Don’t confuse the small changes within kinds that happen as a result of LOSS of genetic information from one generation to another with evolution. This is NOT evolution.
If it’s not observable, then it’s not science. Pure and simple.
However, stay posted on this blog, and over (measurable and observable) time I will point you to exciting observations that support Special Creation.
2. Is it Repeatable?
Well, if you can’t observe it in the first place, then you have no ability to determine its repeatability, so evolution fails on this one too.
Stay posted on this blog though and I’ll point you to lots of repeatable evidences that support recent creation.
3. Is it Provable?
If you can’t observe it or repeat it, how can you prove it? Evolutionary theory is bankrupt and as such will never be proven.
Can we ‘prove’ Special Creation? Can we ‘prove’ that the universe is young? No. But observable and repeatable evidence consistently disproves the need for long ages to produce today’s geological landscape, and the impossibility of time and chance producing the amazing worlds within worlds that science has discovered in Natural Science.
In Part 2 of ‘Is Evolution Science?’ I ask the question, “If evolution isn’t science, what is it?”
Hi! I like your srticle and I would like very much to read some more information on this issue. Will you post some more?
June 16th, 2009 at 11:42 pmHi Gary. Yes, I will be posting more information about Creation/Evolution issues. Did you check out part 2 (click the link at the bottom of part 1). Did you click the link under ‘Pages’ at the top left of this page called ‘Why Creation/Evolution’. It just tells a little of my story as to how understanding Creation/Evolution issues has help my family. I will also be posting a lot of articles with links to http://www.creation.com where you will find heaps of information on the subject. One of those articles here on my blog is called ‘Sandy Surprise’. It’s in the ‘Categories’ section under ‘Creation/Evolution.
