We moved into a new house early in 1996. When we moved in there were no towel rails, no curtains, no floor coverings - and no plug for the laundry trough.
Over the next three years, I bought the towel rails and mounted them. I found the materials for the curtains on a fantastic [...]

I have a new doctor who I saw yesterday. She asked me how long it is since my last Pap Smear. I really couldn’t be sure. I knew that the medical opinion is that you should have one every two years, so figured my answer wouldn’t please the doctor. The truth is, I wasn’t sure [...]

Culture is legitimate.
I’ve seen the Christian faith working in people’s lives in a diverse range of cultures. I’ve lived with families in Zimbabwe, Argentina, Greece, Mexico, New Zealand and the USA. I’ve met up with Christians in Hong Kong, Denmark, Egypt and Spain.
I’ve lived in a grass house with a community of Christians [...]

My daughter is 13 and enjoys writing plays in which her nephews and nieces take part. The productions over the last few years have become more ambitious and her latest venture is the biggest of all.
Instead of using whatever is in the dress-up box for costuming, she has decided she needs to sew some [...]

Summer in Australia can seem a contradiction to many people. Our southern most point is not far below Hobart, which is at the same latitude in the southern hemisphere as New York, Rome and Beijing are in the northern hemisphere. Our northern most point is Thursday Island, which is at the same latitude [...]

When I wrote the first part to “Preparing for the Unexpected”, I had no idea that the worst disaster in Australian history was about to unfold less than an hour from my home.
No-one did.
Record high temperatures (47C/117F), gale force winds, and 10 years of drought combined to create a deadly fire that swooped [...]

It was early 2005, and I was sitting, listening as a minister spoke at a friend’s wedding. In front of me, sat a man I knew to be the minister of a local church. The presiding minister, knowing that there are diverse views on how a marriage should function, bravely brought up the subject of ‘roles’ [...]

Relief! Wow. It wasn’t the longest spell of hot weather I have experienced, but it counts among the most unexpected.
I’ve lived in Melbourne (Australia) for nearly a quarter of a century, and one of the things I’ve come to love about Melbourne is its weather.
(All right you Sydneysiders, stop laughing.)
For [...]

Something amazing has been happening in my yard the last two years. It’s quite stunning really.
Three years ago my fig tree made an attempt to sprout leaves for the summer, but before it had gotten very far, the leaves all dropped off. Figs are one of my favourite fruits, so it was a sad year [...]

I count myself blessed to live within walking distance of the second biggest market in Melbourne.
My husband likes to walk there most weekdays as it’s on the way to the post office where he picks up our mail. It’s a bit of a jaunt for him. I call him the ‘Big White Hunter’ as [...]

I received an email several months ago. I don’t remember who it was from, but it was telling me that a man had been raised from the dead in a shopping centre not far from where I live.
“Wow!” I thought. “That’s got to draw some media attention.” But as the days rolled by, not a [...]

“It’s nearly the end of October already!” exclaimed my 13 year old daughter.
She was echoing a thought that entered my own consciousness from time to time. It was also yet another signal that my daughter was growing up.
Vague memories of me as a girl thinking that Christmas would never come floated [...]
