One of my daughters-in-law has given her children jobs, or chores as some would call them, to do each afternoon after they come home from school.
It falls to her second child, a boy, to get the washing in.
One day, he must have been feeling particularly efficient. Normally on arriving home from school, his first [...]

It’s a rare parent that doesn’t want the best for their child. Parents generally want their children to expand their interests, develop their talents, enjoy good friendships, be successful and have a good marriage and a happy family.
When it comes down to the specifics, we have differing views of what ‘the best’ is. For [...]

We’re going through a bit of a financial tight spot at the moment. It’s happened before, and as on previous occasions, an end will come to it. In the meantime, we have had to adjust our living - go without, mend things more often, think twice before we use the car, only buy essentials.
About [...]

If you haven’t read Part 1 of this posting on Proverbs 22:15 click here. Part 2 will make more sense if you read Part 1 first.
Let’s take a closer look at Proverbs 22:15.
‘Foolishness …’
We are born into foolishness because we are born sinners. For a long time, when I read the word ‘foolishness’ [...]

I can already hear the objections…..
“A rod! That’s barbaric!”
“That was all right for back then, but we’ve been enlightened.”
“Smacking is child abuse.”
“I believe that it’s better to ……”
You like to think you have an ‘open mind’? Then, rather than being offended and closing my blog having already pre-determined that I don’t know what [...]

Some time ago, my 14 year old daughter promised to send me a little humorous example from her life that demonstrates the verse from Matthew 7:2, “And with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.” I thought it was a worthy effort and so am posting it here for a wider [...]

Oh dear! The weight so many parents of young children carry - and I’m not talking of being fat!
Unfortunately, the kind of weight I am talking of is a self-inflicted burden. No-one forced it on the parents. They have simply chosen to shoulder that burden themselves.
I think that its weight would sometimes be unbearable.
When you [...]

We had been married 12 months when our first child was born. We were naïve and had no understanding of, or preparation for, parenting. I think we were pretty typical of most new parents then and now. We had ‘on the job’ training. We learned by trial and error - [...]

It was after 11pm. I had been working at my computer and went to get myself a hot drink, when the 13 year old daughter of some good friends appeared behind me.
“I’ve been in bed and memorizing James chapter 5, but …’, she paused for quite some time, a little unsure of how [...]

In 2005, my husband and I, along with our two youngest children spent a week in Northern Ireland. It was mid-summer and beautiful. The green of the country was glorious, and the temperature was just right for getting out and about.
We stayed with friends who took time out to show us some of the [...]

It was a long haul up the hill to our home. Our first son was nearly a year old and I was pushing the pram he was in, along with bags of groceries, up the steep slope. The day was pleasant, inviting us to be outdoors, and as I passed the neighbourhood homes, here [...]

If you happen to be human, then you will know that life isn’t always smooth sailing. Whether you are Christian or not, you will face bumps along the way.
Sickness may come, loved ones may die, financial challenges may come and go - or simply come to stay. Your marriage may be tested, your children may [...]

My first post on ‘The Case of the Missing Plug’ told of how I had thought the plug for our new laundry trough was missing and how I missed out on the benefits of using this plug for over seven years because of three attitudes: Assumption, Ignorance and a ‘Make Do’ attitude.
In this [...]

We moved into a new house early in 1996. When we moved in there were no towel rails, no curtains, no floor coverings - and no plug for the laundry trough.
Over the next three years, I bought the towel rails and mounted them. I found the materials for the curtains on a fantastic [...]

“Train up a child in the way that he should go and even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
A good place to begin this section is with a scripture that a lot of Christian parents are familiar with. It’s an ‘overview’ type of scripture that gives a general instruction [...]

I had just finished the third session of a four part seminar series on Parenting and opened up for questions. A lady stood and said that what I had shared was good but it didn’t take into account individual differences in children. She said that some children are more sensitive than others and for [...]
